Investing in the health and safety of your employees can boost the health of your business. Building a team of healthy employees in a safe working environment is essential for long-term organisational success.

A pre-employment medical assessment screens individuals for health factors that could limit their ability to safely perform their job and avoid injury. It is a small investment that can minimise the risk of someone undertaking work when they are not fit to perform that work. Further, a pre-employment medical examination can determine whether a prospective employee is capable of effectively performing certain tasks.

Our GPs consider every client's requirement individually, tailoring well designed pre-employment medicals. Whilst some medicals are legislated (aviation, rail and some mining operations), there is no 'one-size-fits all' approach. This is why we ensure to continually work with our clients to improve and fine-tune our approach.

Why do employees need medicals?

Our assessments can include the following examinations. The list below is not exhaustive. If you do require an examination not listed below, please call or email us and we will arrange this for you.

What is included?

Cardiovascular Examination

We provide a general examination including heart sounds, blood pressure and pulse. The patient's physical appearance is also assessed.

Musculoskeletal Examination

This involves assessing the overall function and level of capability of a person’s musculoskeletal system. This generally includes their capacity for weight-bearing, lifting, range of movement and overall physical health.

Central Nervous System Examination

A neurological examination will include an assessment of all cranial nerves (vision, hearing, etc.) along with range of motion, tone and wasting of joints and muscles.

Drug and alcohol testing

Drug and alcohol tests are among the most commonly requested additions to our pre-employment medical screenings. These tests are usually conducted via urine sample.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An ECG measures electrical activity in the heart. An ECG is usually conducted to determine whether a person’s heart is functioning correctly, or whether some abnormalities may be present.

Respiratory Examination

Patients will be auscultated to assess their breathing. Their physical appearance will be assessed for signs of respiratory conditions. Our doctor will also assess the patient's past medical history.

Spirometry

A spirometry test assesses for COPD (asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis). The test involves breathing into a mouth piece at certain intervals. The model used is a SpiroLab 4.

Audiometry

This is conducted using dedicated equipment (an audio booth). Generally speaking, audiometry tests will involve measuring an individual’s ability to hear sounds at varying intensity and tone.

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

The ankle-brachial index test is a quick, noninvasive way to check for peripheral artery disease (PAD).  The ABI test compares the blood pressure measured at your ankle with the blood pressure measured at your arm.

Other

We can also measure height, weight and BMI. Examinations for hernias and other physical abnormalities can also be performed.
